Overview
The Merryweather Heist is a pivotal mission in Grand Theft Auto V, where Michael, Trevor, and Franklin attempt to steal a secretive cargo from Merryweather Security. The mission can be approached in two different ways: the Offshore approach or the Freighter approach, each with its own unique challenges.
In the Offshore approach, the crew uses a submarine and a Cargobob to retrieve the cargo from the ocean floor. In the Freighter approach, the team infiltrates a ship to locate and extract the container.
The mission is a test of strategic planning and execution, requiring the player to choose the best approach and manage the crew effectively.

Walkthrough
1 Retrieve the Submarine
- Drive to the docks. Head to the location marked on the map to find the submarine.
- Steal the submarine. Enter the docks and take control of the submarine.
2 Transport the Submarine
- Fly the Cargobob to the docks. Use the Cargobob to pick up the submarine and transport it to the drop-off point.
3 Locate the Cargo
- Use sonar to find the cargo. Deploy the submarine and use its sonar capabilities to locate the cargo on the ocean floor.
4 Infiltrate the Freighter
- Board the freighter. Climb aboard the ship and make your way to the container.
- Find the container. Search the ship to locate the specific container with the cargo.
5 Escape Merryweather Forces
- Evade pursuing enemies. After securing the cargo, escape the area while avoiding Merryweather's security forces.
Gold Medal Objectives
- Nervous Twitch — Perform the heist without alerting Merryweather.
- Salvager — Find the container within the time limit.
- Show No Mercenary — Eliminate a set number of Merryweather guards.
To achieve the Gold Medal, focus on stealth during the Freighter approach and use the sonar efficiently in the Offshore approach. Ensure quick and precise actions to avoid detection and complete objectives swiftly.
Aftermath
Upon completion of The Merryweather Heist, the crew receives a monetary reward, though it is less than anticipated due to complications during the mission.
The mission unlocks the next heist, Blitz Play, and further develops the strained relationship between Michael and Trevor as tensions rise over the heist's outcome.
