About GTA V's Characters
Grand Theft Auto V's defining innovation is its three-protagonist structure. Rather than telling the story through a single criminal's rise, Rockstar split the campaign across three lives that intertwine and clash: Michael De Santa, the bored 40-something ex-bank-robber in witness protection; Franklin Clinton, the young South LS hustler looking for a way up; and Trevor Philips, Michael's old partner who everyone assumed had died with their last job nine years ago.
Around them orbits a deep supporting cast. Michael lives in an unhappy Rockford Hills marriage to Amanda with two teenage kids, Jimmy and Tracey. Franklin shares his aunt Denise's house and works the streets with Lamar Davis. Trevor runs Sandy Shores meth operations with Ron Jakowski and Wade Hebert, and is haunted by the death of his old fourth crew member, Brad Snider.
The story's villain roster is split between corporate and criminal worlds. Devin Weston is a Silicon Valley billionaire who wants to use the crew as disposable assets; Steve Haines is a corrupt FIB agent blackmailing Michael for inter-agency black ops; Martin Madrazo is a Mexican cartel boss they accidentally cross in an early mission; Stretch is the paranoid Ballas leader trying to kill Franklin's old friends; and Wei Cheng is a Hong Kong Triad boss looking to muscle into Trevor's meth territory.
Heists run on a hireable crew system — the player picks gunmen, drivers and hackers for each major job, with cheaper crew taking a smaller cut but more likely to mess up. Packie McReary returns from GTA IV as one of the available gunmen, and Taliana Martinez can be unlocked as an A-tier driver through a random encounter on the freeway.
Outside the main campaign, 14 Strangers and Freaks deliver the optional side content — the celebrity-stalking Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill, the bail-bond bounty hunter Maude Eccles, the towing-jobs strand from Tonya Wiggins, the desert races run by Cletus Ewing, and the UFO conspiracy theorist Peter Dreyfuss, among others.
